9/29 Sermon Discussion Questions

Recap:

  • Pastor Suzanne talked about the question, “Do I know how to have a conversation with God?”
  • She argued that the kinds of conversations we feel comfortable having with God depend on the type of relationship we have with God and that these relationships are often based on three components: familiarity, authority, and trust.  (You can see the grid she used to illustrate this below).
  • Moses, in the passage we read today, models a conversation style with God that looks like a friend. There is deep familiarity and trust that leads to a very honest dialogue between God and Moses.
  • She reminded us that God will meet us at whatever level of relationship we want to have with him, and that, just like human relationships, our relationship with God ebbs and flows. She invited us to honestly inspect what type of relationship we have with God at this time in our journey.

 Reflection Questions:

  • Where would you say you would place yourself on the grid below right now?
  • What has helped you engage with God in prayer in the past? (i.e. more free time? journaling? utilizing written liturgy? walking while you pray?)
  • What makes it challenging to engage with God now?
  • What do you want from your relationship with God right now?
