Sermon Recap

  • Pastor Suzanne talked about the ways that the Holy Spirit gives us assurance of God’s love and care and nearness.
  • She talked about the process of adoption. In an adoption there is a gap of between the legal paperwork being signed and the child’s experience of safety and security in their new family. The child need consistent experience of love and safety to help them feel the truth of their adoption.
  • Until they experience that, children will often return to their coping mechanisms:
    • Wall of independence
    • Attempt to earn approval
    • Anxiety and fear
    • Withdrawal because of a belief that something is fundamentally wrong with them.
  • Suzanne offered some tangible ways to know and experience the truth of our adoption in Christ (see slide below).

Reflection Questions

  • When you were a kid, was there something tangible that helped you feel safe and secure (like the blankie)?
  • What has helped you feel safe and secure in your closest relationships?
  • Have you ever had experiences with God that helped you feel safe and secure with him?
  • Where do you most feel a need for assurance from the Holy Spirit today? Around your identity, sense of belonging, or purpose?
  • What is one action step you could take to pay attention to how the Holy Spirit might want to give you assurance and security this week?
