Sermon Recap

  • Pastor Suzanne talked about the religious leaders during Jesus’ trial and invited us to consider how it is possible to be both “deeply sincere and dangerously wrong.”
  • She pointed out that the religious leaders had good reason to want to stop Jesus: he was claiming to be God. This was a heresy that the Old Testament says is punishable by death.
  • They then become so focused on getting this accomplished that they are willing to use any means necessary.
  • By the end of the story, they are screaming “We have no King but Ceasar” (another heresy) as a way to get their desired outcome.
  • Suzanne reminded us that when we are trying to control outcomes, we can end up forsaking the God we are trying to protect.

Reflection Questions

  • When in your life have you become aware that you were wrong about something you had been certain about? What was that like for you?
  • When have you been so sure you were right about something that you acted poorly to try to get a particular outcome?
  • Spend some time praying and asking God to give you humility and wisdom. Ask God to show you if there are areas of your life that he is inviting you to hold differently so that you don’t end up “forsaking the God you are trying to protect.”
