Sermon Recap

  • Pastor Sara talked about Pilate’s question to Jesus: “What is truth?”
  • Pilate, due to changes in power dynamics in Rome, was left unsteady, and unsure what would bring him security, so he was left bending to the will of the crowds.
  • She talked about how a lot of people in our postmodern world are wrestling with this question for a variety of different reasons.
  • She encouraged people who are walking alongside people questioning their faith to consider asking questions or telling stories or remaining quiet instead of rushing to defend what they believe.
  • For those wrestling with their faith, Pastor Sara offered some “anchors” that were helpful for her as she wrestled:
    • God is love: gracious, compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, and acts with justice.
    • The Kingdom of God (full of peace, justice, joy, love, freedom from pain and death) is coming even when it feels like everything is broken.
    • The Nicene Creed - a creed affirmed by every denomination of the church across time.

Reflection Questions

  • When have you questioned some aspect of what you were taught about your faith? How did you settle that wrestling?
  • Do you know someone who is asking a version of the question “What is truth?” right now? What do you think is at the heart of the wrestling?
  • In the scripture passage, Jesus leaves Pilate’s question without an answer. What does that stir in you? Why do you think he does this?

If you are looking for a way to understand someone who is questioning their faith, or you yourself are hoping to start reconstructing after a season of wrestling, here is a book that was helpful for me in a similar season. It’s called “Searching for Sunday” by Rachel Held Evans. I don’t agree with all her conclusions, but I do think she articulates the wrestling and reconstructing process beautifully.
