Sermon Recap

  • Pastor Suzanne taught us about the character Annas - who served as the high priest, but was removed from his position by Rome. Annas then appointed his sons as priests and continued to operate with authority behind the scenes.
  • Annas was treated unjustly and then felt justified in his attempts to maintain power and even sanction violence.
  • Annas should have been the person who recognized Jesus, and ended up being the person that assured his death.
  • Suzanne asked us to consider what we justify when we feel like we have been wronged or lose control.
  • Jesus, when he is treated unjustly, maintains integrity and speaks truth.

Reflection Questions

  • Can you think of a time in your life where you were treated unjustly and then felt justified to respond or behave poorly? Spend some time confessing those behaviors now.
  • Is there anything you have been “doing in the shadows” (i.e. drinking a little too much, harboring hateful thoughts, gossiping) recently that God is inviting you to turn away from?
  • If you feel like you are not getting just treatment or are not getting what you need, spend some time asking God to show you how he wants you to respond with integrity.

Below is a picture of the “sit in’s” during the Civil Rights movement. It is one of the powerful examples from this movement of people resisting deep injustice with integrity. These men and women embodied truth in their resistance. They did so in a way that brought injustice into the light without violence.
