Why Do We Take Second Offerings?

Sermon Summary

In this final message of the “Why We Do That” series, Pastor Suzanne explains that the second, voluntary offering on Communion Sundays reminds us that our table is bigger than our church and belongs to God’s global family. Drawing on Paul’s warning to Corinth (1 Cor 11) and the generosity of the Macedonian churches (2 Cor 8), she suggested that focusing on Jesus’ own generosity frees us to let what God has placed in our hands become grace for others.

Reflection Questions

  • Think of a table where you felt deeply welcomed and one where you felt left out. Where might someone experience you as the one leaving them out?
  • Take a few minutes to list the gifts God has given you, beginning with Jesus. Then ask the Holy Spirit whether there’s something (time, resources, finances) he’s inviting you to place in someone else’s hands.
