10/27 Sermon Discussion Questions

Recap:

  • Pastor Suzanne talked about the question “How well do I know my shadow self?”
  • She discussed the reality that everyone is both made in the image of God and we all have sinful patterns that we are often unaware of. ““All of us develop ways of adjusting and staying safe in the midst of whatever danger is present in our environment; patterns that become normal for us.  Because these patterns are formed unconsciously while we are still young, as adults we have little conscious awareness of these adaptations until they start to hamper our current relationships and no longer serve the journey God is inviting us into.” – Ruth Haley Barton
  • She used Moses’ story to illustrate how traumatic experiences can lead to coping mechanisms that can become harmful patterns.
  • Pastor Suzanne argued that sin is not just a list of bad actions but rather a symptom of a deeper issue: the decision to take life into our own hands instead of trusting God.
  • She encouraged us to seek God's help in confronting their shadow selves and to find freedom through the process of healing and forgiveness.

 Reflection Questions:

  • How do you respond to the idea that we all develop ways of adjusting and staying safe in the midst of whatever danger or difficulty is present in our environment?
  • How does the story of Moses highlight the importance of confronting our shadow selves and how can we learn from his journey?
  • Are there patterns you are hiding because you are scared of being found out? Is there someone safe you could confide in and ask for help before the situation becomes worse?
  • Can you imagine that God would welcome you even in your darkest places? Spend some time reflecting on the parable of the prodigal son in Luke 15:11-24 paying special attention to how the Father treats the youngest child who has run away.
